Ask:

• "Which girls are you thinking of?"
• "What does 'not interested' look like? Are they off-task? Struggling? Quiet?"
• "What about the boys—are all of them engaged?"

Why: Often the generalization falls apart when examined specifically. Some students are disengaged for various reasons that aren't gender-based.
