First Session: Building the Foundation (30-45 minutes)

First Session: Building the Foundation (30-45 minutes)

If this is your first time meeting with this teacher, focus on:

1. Describe Your Role (5 min)

- Explain the coaching cycle

- Emphasize your non-evaluative role

- Clarify confidentiality: what you share and don't share with administrators

Sample language: "My role is to support you as you bring CS to your classroom. I'm not here to evaluate you—I'm here to partner with you. What we discuss stays between us unless you want to share something with leadership."

2. Learn The Teacher's "Why" (10 min)

- "What brought you to teaching?"

- "What drew you to CS or what do you hope to gain from this?"

- "Are you feeling excited, nervous, required to do this?"

- Listen actively and take notes

3. Share Your Learning Journey (5 min)

- Share your own struggles and growth in CS

- Be vulnerable—this builds trust

- Humor helps!

4. Understand Their Context: "Who Are We Designing For?" (10 min)

- What languages are spoken in the classroom?

- Any students with IEPs or accommodations?

- What are students' interests?

- How do students work together currently?

5. Identify "Use What's Working" (10 min)

- What classroom routines work well?

- What management strategies are effective?

- How can we build on existing strengths?

6. Set Initial Goals (5 min)

- Based on teacher's comfort level and context

- Start small and build confidence

- Document goals in a shared location
